DAY 01

Arrive in Enshi and read a mountain city

No long transfers. Enshi sits deep in the Wuling mountains, Tujia and Miao country governed under the native chieftain system through the Yuan, Ming and Qing until the Yongzheng reforms folded it into the regular prefectures — height and distance produced a distinct language, architecture and cooking. Walk a stretch of the Qingjiang in the afternoon and look at Tujia building forms at Nüercheng. Dinner is hezha with cured pork: soybeans cooked pulp and all, the most everyday bowl here. Today is deliberately easy — partly to settle into the altitude (the town is around 450m, tomorrow's canyon reaches 1,700m), partly to save your legs.

  • Half-day arrival · light walking
DAY 02

The long walk in Enshi Grand Canyon

About 100km return with 8–10km of walking inside. The canyon is one stretch of a karst system running more than a hundred kilometres along the middle Qingjiang, where stone forests, sinkholes, sheer walls and slot canyons occur together. Qixingzhai in the morning climbs the cliffside plank walks past Yizhuxiang, a free-standing pillar 150 metres tall and only four across. The Yunlong slot canyon in the afternoon puts you on the floor among waterfalls and bedding planes. Cumulative ascent and descent is serious and the steps are many, so wear shoes with grip and use the cable car and shuttles sensibly. Spring brings frequent cloud seas but slippery paths; autumn holds the views steadiest.

  • Full day up and down · demanding
DAY 03

Hefeng mountain roads and Tujia settlements

About 153km, a little over three hours. Today is mostly moving, but the road is the content: heading south from Enshi, the highway coils through the folds of the Wuling range, with two or three village stops to watch how stilt houses grow along the slope — timber frames, hearths and lanes all answering a humid mountain. Hefeng was Rongmei chieftain country, held for more than four hundred years, and Pingshan keeps over a hundred sites including the ducal seat, the Wanren cave and the Xiliu fort. It is red ground too: He Long moved in and out of Hefeng seven times. Stay in town — tomorrow's boat is an early one.

  • Mountain roads · frequent short stops
DAY 04

Clear water through Pingshan Gorge

About 30km return. The scenic area is in Pingshan village, Rongmei township, 12km from town. Take the first boat if you can: early hours are quiet, the light comes in at an angle, and the water is at its clearest — that colour is not a filter but rock, depth and the day's light finishing the job together. The boat is slow; look up and there is cliff, look down and the stone grain is still visible under the surface. Afterwards a clifftop path looks back along the narrows. Return to town for the afternoon, or start toward Jianshi early to take some distance off tomorrow. Keep the camera clear of spray.

  • Half day afloat · unhurried
DAY 05

Down to the Yangtze via Jianshi

About 300km, five to six hours. Today makes the biggest geographic change of the trip, dropping from karst highland to the Yangtze valley. Join the Shanghai–Chongqing expressway past Jianshi, through a dense run of tunnels — the road itself is how you read western Hubei, since every ridge you pass through shifts the vegetation, the temperature and the shape of the settlements. Keep stops to what is needed; lunch at a service area or in Jianshi. Yichang by evening, down from over a thousand metres to about sixty, which will feel noticeably heavier and warmer, so keep drinking. In the rainy season allow an extra hour for the mountain sections.

  • Long road day · mostly moving
DAY 06

Xiling Gorge, ending a mountain journey on the river

Half a day, about 40km on the water. Xiling runs 66 kilometres from Xiangxikou near Zigui east to Nanjinguan, the longest of the three gorges and historically the most feared — Qingtan, Xietan and Konglingtan were each a gate of death for boatmen. Decades of channel works after 1949, and the backwater once Gezhouba filled, sank those rocks out of harm's way and closed that chapter. Today is a gentle passage that lets you look back: the Qingjiang, the streams and the valleys you walked for five days all end up in the water beneath you. Back to Yichang in the afternoon.

  • Half day afloat · gentle close
