HISTORY
Karst and the Tujia Highlands
The Enshi Grand Canyon is one stretch of a karst system running more than a hundred kilometres along the middle Qingjiang, where stone forests, sinkholes, sheer walls and slot canyons all occur together. These highlands have long been Tujia country, governed under the native chieftain system through the Yuan, Ming and Qing until the Yongzheng reforms of the 1720s folded them into the regular prefectures. Height and distance produced a distinct language, architecture and cooking — and left the landform unusually intact.
GETTING THERE
How to arrive
High-speed rail
Enshi station, 49km from the canyon. The coach station opposite runs a direct shuttle 07:00–17:30, leaving when full, about 1.5 hours, 25 yuan.
By air
Enshi Xujiaping airport is 8km from town; you still change to the shuttle or a hired car for the canyon.
Note
The walking inside is long with serious ascent and descent. Use the park shuttles sensibly and allow a full day.
