BACKGROUND
The Tujia Baishou Dance was inscribed on China's first national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2006. The ancient Baishou Hall at Shemihu in Laifeng County, founded during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, stands as the most intact surviving sacred hall. Divided into 'Great Baishou' (multi-village tribal assemblies spanning several days with ancestral livestock offerings) and 'Small Baishou' (village seasonal thanksgiving), the dance has never been a performance for spectators. Its expansive stone flags, concentric circular formations, and the thunderous cadence of red pig-skin drums and brass gongs are designed to awaken shared generational memories and communal vitality.
